General information only

The content of this site is patient education. It describes why skin stays loose after major weight loss, what can and cannot change it, and what treatment costs in recovery, scarring and time. It is not a diagnosis, it is not a treatment recommendation for any individual, and it does not create a doctor-patient relationship.

No substitute for examination

Whether a fold is skin or fat, how much your skin will retract, and whether you are ready for a staged plan depend on findings that can only be established by examining you, reviewing your weight history and checking your medical and nutritional status. Reading this site cannot substitute for that, and a decision made from a website alone is a decision made without information.

Results vary and are not guaranteed

Individual results differ, and after major weight loss they differ more than in most surgery. Scars are long, permanent, and mature over a year. Healing takes months and each stage needs its own recovery. No surgeon, and no website, can guarantee an outcome, and any statement that appears to promise one should be treated with suspicion wherever you encounter it.

If something is wrong after surgery

If you have had surgery and develop rapidly increasing swelling, a tense painful area, spreading redness, fever, bleeding that does not stop, calf pain or swelling, chest pain or shortness of breath, contact the treating team or seek emergency care immediately rather than waiting to be seen at a routine appointment.
